The first weekend in December found us transported back to the 1830’s to experience the joy and simplicity of an old fashioned Christmas family get-together at O’Hara Mill, a homestead conservation area near Madoc. Over the course of three evenings, close to 1,200 adults and children joined in on the festivities that took place in an original settler’s log home that was relocated to this site.

While attending the Roseneath Fair, we became magnetically attracted to the phenomenal carousel where we were transported back to our youth. Soon we found ourselves astride our chosen steed, merrily going round and round, up and down to the music of the Wurlitzer. All too soon the ride came to an end, however the magic will last a lifetime.

The first weekend of August in Almonte is all about puppets. For the past six years,
the residents have turned the streets into a collage of puppet theatres.
Inspired by the puppetry of Almonte resident, Noreen Young, the event has turned
into an International Puppet Festival that is endorsed by the Canadian Commission for
UNESCO.

In mid June we walked amongst a rare display of thousands of wild, Showy Lady’s Slipper Orchids. These breathtaking flowers are located in a bog at Purdon Conservation Area, just west of Lanark.
This is Canada’s largest colony of this species of Orchid, with more than 10,000 of the 16,000 or so plants bursting into delicate pink and white bloom each year between mid June and early July.
